(See copyright info at end of this file.) A D V E R T I S E M E N T. CONTRARY to my intention, this third volume is larger than the second, and I fear that the fourth, of which nearly one half is already printed, may not be confined in fewer pages than the present. My apology will, probably, be accepted by all subscribers, for it was most reasonable that each volume should begin with a _new_ letter. KEAIS, SAMUEL, New Hampsh. m. 4 Feb. 1696, Mary, wid. of John Hoddy, had Samuel, b. 11 Apr. 1697; and William, 27 Aug. 1699. KEATS, RICHARD, Boston 1677, bricklayer. KEAYNE, BENJAMIN, Boston 1638, only s. of Robert, b. in London, came with his f. when his age was rat. perhaps two or more yrs. too low, freem. 6 Sept. 1639, ar. co. 1638, m. bef. 9 June 1639, Sarah, d. of Gov. Nov. 1646 for irreg. prophesy. and was excom. in Oct. 1647, and sadly degrad. but was made the w. of one Pacey. Ann, wh. was well provid. for in will of gr.f. K. mak. the chief gent. here to assist his w. "to dispose of her for her future educ. unto some such wise and godly mistress or fam. where she may have her carnal disposition most of all subdu. and reform. by strict discipline; and also that they would show like care and assist. in seasona. time to provide some fit and godly match, proportiona. to her est. and condit. that she may live comforta. and be fit to do good in her place, and not to suffer her to be circumvent. or to cast away hers. upon some swagger. gent. or other, that will look more after the enjoy. what she hath, than live in the fear of God, and true love to her," m. 11 Dec. 1657, Edward Lane, a merch. from London, and, next, to Nicholas Paige; but she [[2]] seems ill to have repaid the pious care of her gr.f. and a. 30 June 1704. Her gr.f. took care, that her mo. "Sarah Dudley, now Sarah Pacey, may have no part" of the prop. thus giv. to the d. The unhappy w. of K. d. Nov. 1659. See Winthrop I. 314 and II. 4. In 1624 he had been one of the Undertakers, wh. encourag. the Plymouth Pilgrims, and of his pub. spirit no doubt can be felt by any wh. reads his will, begun 1 Aug. 1653, and for some yrs. extend. of h. a very short abstr. is seen in Geneal. WILLIAM, Hingham 1637, of Sudbury a. 1641, rem. to Lancaster, freem. 1647; in his old age m. sec. w. 16 May 1664, Rebecca, wid. of Thomas Josselyn, and d. 14 July 1670, leav. William, and Henry, bef. ment. His will of 26 July 1669 adds nothing to our acquaint. with his fam. WILLIAM, Sudbury, eldest s. prob. of the preced. by wh. he was, perhaps, left in Eng. came in the Confidence from Southampton 1638, call. of Ashmore, with Edmund, bef. ment. wh. may have been uncle or br. rem. to Marlborough, freem. 1666; by w. Jane had Mary, b. at S. 4 May 1667; Sarah, 23 Jan. 1669; and Hannah, 8 Jan. 1671; was an ens. d. at Marlborough, 4 Jan. 1684. I suppose the name is mispr. Kerby in Geneal. Reg. VIII. 241. KESKEYS, HENRY, Boston, by w. Ruth had Henry, b. 3 May 1656. KETCHAM, EDWARD, Ipswich 1635, freem. 9 Mar. 1637, may reasona. be thot. progenit. of all of the name, in our country and therefore I regret the more that we are ign. of the circumstances of his migrat. and subseq. resid. By conject. it seems to me, that EDWARD of Stratford, wh. d. bef. 1678, was his s. whose d. Rebecca m. 14 Feb. 1678, Thomas Taylor of Norwalk. An Edward E. m. Mary, d. of Richard Harcutt, but prob. he was of L. I. yet may have been the Stratford man, wh. in his will of June 1655 names three ds. Mary, Hannah, and Esther. HENRY, Ipswich 1638, perhaps s. of the preced. JOHN, Ipswich 1648, prob. s. of Edward, rem. to that pt. of L. I. call. Setauket, now Brookhaven, constable, stood up for the jurisdict. of Conn. was honor. 1662, with a commiss. to make his neighb. swear, and rep. 1664. In 1668 he rem. to Newtown, there was a man of influence to his d. 1697. Riker, 89. JOSEPH, Norwalk 1672, possib. s. of the preced. or gr.s. of Edward, m. 3 Apr. 1679, Mercy, d. of deac. I. 1655, prob. br. of John, was of Setauket, freem. of Conn. 1664, and with Edward, wh. may, also, have been br. at Huntington, 1672. KETTLE, JAMES, Salem, s. of the first John, by w. Elizabeth had John, and Nathaniel, tw. b. 9 Dec. 1689, of wh. John, prob. d. soon; James, 27 Dec. 1691; Elizabeth 19 Jan. 1694; and John, again, 3 July 1696; JOHN, Gloucester, was in 1641, then a minor, charg. for breach of Sabbath & c.; by w. Elizabeth d. of the first William Allen of Salem, had John, b. 1654; William, 1656; Elizabeth b. 15 Feb. 1658; Mary, 5 Mar. 1660; Samuel, 2 Apr. 1662; and James, 20 Mar. 1665. He rem. and d. at Salem 12 Oct. 1685. Prob. from him is deriv. the name Kettle Cove at the adjoin. town of Manchester. JOHN, Charlestown, eldest s. of Richard of the same, was, perhaps, of Portsmouth 1663. He m. first, Sarah, d. of Edmund Goodenow, had John (wh. m. 11 Sept. 1688, Abigail, d. of Richard Austin, and d. at C. 17 Mar. 1691, [[15]] aged 30); Sarah, b. in Sudbury, 8 Mar. 1663; and Joseph. He had a sec. w. Mr. Wyman says, Elizabeth d. of Samuel Ward the sec. wh. was carr. away from Lancaster in 1676, says Frothingham, 82; and by her had only Jonathan, b. at L. 24 Nov. 1670. JONATHAN, Charlestown 1677, youngest br. of the preced. m. 30 Mar. 1676, Abigail, d. of James Convers, wh. d. 25 Jan. 1691, aged 33, had Jonathan, b. 1677, wh. d. soon, and he d. 18 Dec. 1720. His other ch. Ann, b. 1679; Jonathan. 1681; and Abigail, 1684, were bapt. 29 Mar. 1685, when he join. to the ch.; and he had aft. James, 1686; and David, 1689, d. the same yr. JOSEPH, Charlestown, elder br. of the preced. freem. 1670, m. 5 July 1665, Hannah, d. of William Frothingham, had Hannah, wh. d. 26 June 1666; Hannah, again, d. 5 Sept. 1669; Richard, bapt. 1 May 1670; Esther, 29 Jan. 1671, d. 25 May 1678; Hannah, 27 Oct. 1672, d. young; Joseph, 31 Jan. 1675; Elizabeth 18 Mar. 1677, Esther, again, 13 Feb. 1679; William, 6 Feb. 1681; Mary, 25 Mar. 1683; Benjamin, 7 Sept. 1684; Rebecca, 7 Jan. 1687; and Hannah, again, 7 July 1689. His s. Richard d. 7 Dec. 1690; and his w. d. 15 Sept. 1693; he was chos. deac. 1695; m. for sec. w. Dorothy, wid. of Thomas Hett, wh. d. 11 Dec. 1710, in her 60th yr. and he d. 5 Apr. 1711. NATHANIEL, Charlestown, br. of the preced. by first w. Hannah, m. 13 June 1669, wh. d. 19 Nov. 1670, had only Nathaniel; m. 30 Oct. 1672, Hannah, d. of James Eidder, both unit. with the ch. 22 Mar. 1686, and on 29 of same had bapt. He had three others, wh. d. bef. bapt. was one of the constables, 1690, and d. 1723. PETER, came in the Abigail, 1635, aged 10, from London; but who can tell, whether he grew to manhood, where he liv. wh. he m. or when he d. ? RICHARD, Charlestown 1633, butcher, freem. 4 Mar. 1635, by w. Esther, d. of Samuel Ward, had Hannah, bapt. 29 Oct. 1637, m. 21 Jan. 1657, John Call; John, b. 6, bapt.8 Dec. 1639; Joseph, 15, bapt. 21 Feb. 1641; Samuel, 19 Nov. 1642; Nathaniel, 11 Oct. 1644; Jonathan, 1646. Perhaps we may doubt the ch. rec. of Budington, 247, of the date, 25 July 1633, giv. the. adm. of "Richard Kettle and Esther his w." as a modern interpolat. in its latter clause, bec. the Boston ch. rec. of 26 Jan. 1634 has this entry, "Esther Ward, our br. Atherton Hough's maid serv." for evid. of her adm. and the dism. on 17 July 1642 reads, "Our sis. Esther Ward, now w. to Richard Kettle of Charlestown hath letter of recommenda. gr. unto her to the ch. at C." Possib. he had two ws. nam. Esther, hut it is less prob. than that the Charlestown ch. rec. was enrich. with a postlimin. addit. It must always be rememb. that we have not orig. ch. rec. of early yrs. in either Boston or Charlestown ch. but only copies, made prob. betw. 1650 and 1670, of both. He was usually [[16]] call. serg. and d. 28 June 1681, aged 71. Esther, his w. d. 2 or 5 July 1679. ROBERT, Gloucester 1653, perhaps br. of John, wh. was three yrs. older. Researches, 218, 274; and he was k. 8 Sept. 1755, when the Fr. and Ind. under Baron Dieskau were defeat. Five of this name had, in 1826, been gr. at Dart. Sometimes it was writ. as sound. Kies. Whether he had ch. I am not advis. but he was liv. certain. at S. up to 1701, perhaps later. NICHOLAS, Watertown, may have come in the fleet with Winthrop and Saltonstall 1630, by w. In that century a singlep was used. WILLIAM, Watertown 1636, d. 30 Aug. 1658, "aged a. 80 yrs." Perhaps he came as early as Nicholas; and had, in his will of 1655, not nam. any w. but refer. to ch. of wh. sev. were brot. by him from Eng. and to gr.ch. His ch. were William; Mary; Elizabeth; John, b. 1624; James, 1627; Ann; and Judith. Mary m. Thomas Smith; Elizabeth m. in Eng. a Buttery; Ann m. Thomas Philbrick, but d. bef. her f. wh. in his will names her childr.; and Judith m. Nicholas Cady. WILLIAM, Watertown, s. of the preced. by w. Mary had prob. Joseph, beside Priscilla, b. 10 Nov. 1642; and by w. Margaret had Judith, b. 2 Mar. 1653; Elizabeth 23 July 1657; and, perhaps, others; left wid. Priscilla, wh. had been wid. of Thomas Akers, and s. PHILIP, Lynn 1637. Several of this name have [[35]] been gr. at Harv. of wh. William, 1751, was nine yrs. a tutor, and Presid. of M. M. S. d. 2 Nov. 1788, aged 56. KNELL, KNEALE, or KNILL, JOHN, Charlestown, perhaps s. of Nicholas, rem. to Boston, had w. Elizabeth wh. bec. third w. of Nathaniel Bachiler of Hampton, 23 Oct. 1689. Ch. of K. were John, b. 13 May 1679, bapt. 12 Sept. 1680; Hannah, bapt. 1 May 1681; and Richard, b. 26, bapt. 27 May 1683. NICHOLAS, Stratford 1650, m. His will names only w. and the two s. He seems to have been a man of some conseq. has Mr. prefix, and the ment. in town rec. of his d. calls him "that aged benefact. of the country." PHILIP, Charlestown, perhaps br. of John, by w. Ruth, m. 5 Oct. 1666, as wid. Allen, had Ruth, b. 6, bapt. 10 July 1670; Elizabeth 15, bapt. 26 Apr. 1674; and Philip, 4 July 1675, bapt. the same day. His wid. petitn. the Gov. and Counc. 30 Oct. 1697, for redress in the case of her serv. Sambo, impress. under 21 yrs. of age. His will, made at the age of 51 or 2 yrs. 18 Feb. 1689, was not pro. bef. 15 Oct. 1699. THOMAS, Salem 1677. KNIGHT, or KNIGHTS, ALEXANDER, Ipswich 1635, had kept an inn at Chelmsford, Eng. says Vincent in his Hist. of the Pequot war. Perhaps we may be justif. in think. he came in the Defence, but could not obtain license to emb. being a subsidy man; we kn. at least, that in that sh. that yr. came from London, Sarah K. aged 50; and Dorothy, 30, of wh. one might be w. and the other sis. or d. APSIA, Charlestown 1637, if the force of Frothingham, 57 and 88, can render such a name credible. Without sight of the MS. I should indulge the license of modest conject. to make it Apphia. BENJAMIN, Newbury; s. of the sec. John of the same, m. Abigail, d. of Henry Jaques, had Benjamin, b. 8 Feb. 1693; Isaac, 15 Jan. 1695; Abigail, 15 Apr. 1697; Daniel, 4 Dec. 1699, d. young; Daniel, again, 11 Jan. ]702; and George, 31 Jan. 1704. CHARLES, Salem, m. 9 May 1667, Sarah Lemon, d. I presume of Robert, had Elizabeth b. 18 May 1668; Mary, 7 Apr. 1670; and Sarah, 22 July 1673; was a soldier of Gardner's comp. wound. in the gr. Narraganset fight, 19 Dec. 1675. In Essex Inst. II. 256, this name is Knite. DANIEL, York 1640, perhaps in Ind. war rem. to Lynn, d. 29 Oct. 1672. He may have been inf. s. of Jacob. EZEKIEL, Salem, if the gr. of ld. 1637, wh. Felt ment. drew him thither, but most of his days was of Braintree, by w. Elizabeth wh. was bur. 28 Apr. 1642, had Ezekiel, b. 1 Feb. 1641, d. at 7 mos. EZEKIEL, Wells 1645, prob. had w. and ch. in early life, and may be the same as the preced. was commiss. i. e. rep. 1661, at York, much betrust. in public serv. and aft. 1662 m. Mary, d. of Gov. Theophilus Eaton, wid. of Valentine Hill of Dover, formerly of Boston; and, next, the wid. of John Lovering, and she d. bef. 29 June 1675, when he present. a bill [[36]] for support. of the childr. of L. and he d. 1687. His will of 18 Apr. in that yr. pro. 16 Sept. foll. made Mr. Shubael Dummer, capt. Job Alcock, and Mr. John Bass excors. but its provis. was very plain; all est. to w. for her life, and of remaind. two parts to s. Ezekiel, and one to d. Elizabeth Wentworth of Dover, wh. is believ. to have been w. of Ezekiel W. FRANCIS, Pemaquid 1648. GEORGE, Hingham, came, 1638, in the Diligent, with w. and ch. from Barrow, a parish of Co. Suffk. near Bury St. Edmunds. GEORGE, Scarborough, d. 1671, in his will of 5 Apr. of that yr. gives to w. Elinor, s. Nathan, and a. Elizabeth His wid. m. Henry Brooking, as perhaps I may be justif. for conject. by the dark passage in Geneal. Reg. IX. 220. GEORGE, Hartford 1671, d. 19 Apr. 1698, his inv. being of 15 June next yr. leav. wid. Sarah, sev. ds. but no s. His w. was Sarah Church, d. of John, and ch. were Sarah, b. 27 Apr. 1680, wh. m. as Porter writes, 25 Dec. 1699, George Saxton; Love, 10 Sept. 1682, m. 20 Nov. 1702, Thomas Andrews; Ann, 6 Apr. 1688, m. 9 Dec. 1715, prob. as sec. w. Samuel Galpin; and Elizabeth 13 Dec. 1690, m. 12 June 1707, Nathaniel Cole. JACOB, Lynn, s. of William, m. 25 Dec. 1668, Sarah Burt, had Sarah, b. 28 Nov. 1670, d. within 13 mos.; Daniel, 25 Oct. 1672; Elizabeth 4 Aug. 1677. His w. Sarah, d. 14 Feb. 1682, and he m. 18 Sept. foll. Hannah Rand. JOHN, Dorchester 1634, with prefix of resp. prob. rem. but may have been that John wh. d. in a town not ment. 4 Nov. 1634. JOHN, Newbury, came from Southampton, 1635, in the James; was a tailor of Romsey in Hants, adm. freem. with his br. Richard 25 May 1636, had w. Elizabeth wh. d. 20 Mar. 1645, and by her, or a former w. had John, b. 1622. His next w. was Ann, wid. of Richard Ingersoll of Salem, and he d. May 1670. JOHN, Watertown 1636, a maulster, not in my opin. the freem of 1636, as Bond thot. was among orig. proprs. of Sudbury 1642, prob. the freem. of 10 May 1643, was of Woburn 1653, first signer of a petit. for ch. liberty. JOHN, Beverly, a mason, s. of William, brot. from Eng. by his f. bef. 1637, went home, it is said, to take part in the gr. civ. war on the side of Parliam. m. in Eng. but soon aft. came hither, had eldest s. John, beside William, Joseph, Emma, and Martha, went again to Eng. a. 1672, to obt. est. left by his f. and there d. All this was sw. by two witness. at Beverly in June 1743, ea. of the age of 85 yrs. wh. kn. him, and his eldest s. John, and the eldest s. of that John, then liv. at Manchester. It must not, then, be suppos. that he was the same as the foll. as plausib. might be suggest. JOHN, Newbury, s. of John of the; same, b. in Eng. m. 1647, Bathshua, d. of Richard Ingersoll of Salem, had John, b. 16 Aug. 1648; Joseph, 21 June 1662; Elizabeth 18 Oct. 1655; Mary, 8 Sept. 1657; Sarah, 13 Apr. 1660; Hannah, 22 Mar. 1662, d. young; Hannah, again, 30 Aug. 1664; Richard, 26 July 1666; Benjamin, 21 Aug. 1668; and Isaac, 31 Aug. 1672, wh. d. at 18 yrs.; was freem. 1671, and d. 25 Feb. 1678, in 56th yr. and his wid. d. 25 Oct. 1705. Elizabeth m. 25 Feb. 1674, Cutting Noyes; Mary m. 13 Jan. 1681, Timothy Noyes; and Hannah m. 31 Mar. 1684, James Noyes. JOHN, Charlestown 1653, s. of John, a cooper, was prob. b. in Eng. m. 25 Apr. 1654, Ruhamah Johnson, had Ruhamah, b. 29 Jan. 1655, d. at two wks.; Elizabeth 3 June 1656; John, 4 Nov. 1657; Ruhamah, again, 16 Feb. 1659; and Abigail, bapt. 25 Nov. 1660; but I kn. not, whether he had others of sec. or third w. tho. it seems prob. In the ch. rec. of adm. 1667, Abigail K. is call. d. of sis. Stower's, and that may indicate, but not exclusive. a maiden; for "goodman John K." comes in few mos. aft.; and on 23 Sept. 1677 is found" Mary K. the w. of our br. John K. He m. 19 Dec. 1678, wid. Mary Clements, as fourth w. and she d. 12 [[37]] July 1682, and, again, "9 Jan. 1680, Mary K. w. of our br. John K." and finally, "9 Mar. 1684, Sarah K. w. of our br. John K. by dism. from Boston first ch." as Budington's valua. list, pp. 248, 9 and 50 show. So that we might take the last two, or even three to belong to John the younger and leave eno. But five ws. this man had. From the will of ano. John of Charlestown, no doubt his f. made 14 Feb. 1673, of wh. we see not the day of pro. but find the inv. of 1 June 1674, we find no other relat. nam. but Elizabeth and Abigail, ds. of his s. John, s.-in-law Robert Peirce of Woburn, and the w. his own d. Mary, and makes overseer, his friend and br. (but this means only, I judge, the ch. relationsh.) John Chickering wh. was the physician. For his third w. this John of C. took, 22 June 1668, Mary Bridge, wh. d. Oct. 1678. In spite of his five ws. he liv. to ripe age, for in 1679 he was call. 46 yrs. old, and his fourth w. 52; and his will, made 28 Nov. 1701, was pro. 13 Dec. 1714. JOHN, Lynn, had Martha, b. 11 Aug. 1657. JOHN, Northampton, freem. 1676. JOHN, Charlestown, not s. of John of the same. by w. Persis had Persis, bapt. 2 May 1669, d. young; Mary, 31 July 1670; Persis, again, 17 Mar. 1672; John, 23 Nov. 1673; Samuel, 12 Sept. 1675; perhaps sev. more, and some of these may belong to the other John of C. for, Mr. Wyman assures me, no John of C. had w. Persis. JOHN, Newbury, eldest br. of Benjamin, m. 1 Jan. 1672, Rebecca, d. of Rev. James Noyes, had James, b. 3 Sept. 1672; Rebecca, 27 Apr. 1674; John, 3 Apr. 1676; Sarah, 25 Feb. 1679; Elizabeth 13 Apr. 1681; Joseph, 9 Oct. 1683; and Nathaniel, 22 Dec. 1688. JOHN, Woburn, not s. of the first John of Charlestown, m. 2 Mar. 1681, Abigail, eldest ch. of John Craggin, had Abigail, b. 27 Dec. 1681; John, 31 Jan. 1684, d. next yr.; John, again, 3 Mar. 1686; Benjamin, 20 Mar. 1688, d. under 10 yrs.; Samuel, 27 Sept. 1690; Ebenezer, 20 Aug. 1695; Rebecca, 14 May 1698; Benjamin, 20 Oct. 1700; and Amaziah, 14 Dec. 1703. JOHN, Dover, perhaps s. of Richard of the same, m. Leah, wid. of Benedictus Tarr, it is said, but no more is kn. of him, exc. that his inv. was brot. in 17 June 1700. JONATHAN, Salem 1670, m. prob. at Woburn 31 Mar. 1663, Ruth Wright, and had Jonathan; Ebenezer; Enos; Ruth; and Deborah; and he d. 17 Jan. 1683. He was prob. s. of the first Philip. A John, with w. Mary, and Joseph, with w. Hannah, early at Watertown, are ment. by Bond, but no issue is found in, his vol. JOSEPH, Woburn, freem. 1652, had Sarah, b. 8 Mar. 1651; Samuel, 8 Sept. 1652, d. next yr.; Hannah, 25 Mar. 1654; John, 16 Jan. 1656; Elizabeth 7 Apr. 1658; Mary, 6 June 1660, d. at 10 mos.; Dinah, 4 July 1661; Samuel, again, 18 Mar. 1663; Mary, again, 12 Dec. 1672, d. in few mos.; Joseph, 12 Dec. 1673; Edward, 31 Aug. 1677; Isaac, 24 Feb. 1680, d. next mo.; James, 22 Apr. 1681, d. next [[38]] day; Ruth, 7 May 1682; Ebenezer, 24 Aug. 1684; and Amos, 19 May 1687; but most prob. by more than one w. and quite prob. by two Josephs. The senr. d. 13 Aug. 1687, and his wid. Hannah d. 13 Jan. 1695. JOSEPH, nam. by Thomas Spaule of Boston, in his will of 23 Feb. 1671, as the h. of testator's d. Mary, and hav. childr. and to her and them mak. resid. devise aft. that to his own w. dur. wid. I guess was of B. JOSEPH, Newbury, br. of Benjamin, freem. 1684, m. 31 Oct. 1677, Deborah, prob. d. of sec. Tristram Coffin, had Judith, b. 23 Oct. 1678; John, 20 Jan. 1680, d. at 16 yrs.; Joseph, 16 Feb. 1682, d. within two yrs.; Deborah, 26 Apr. 1684; Sarah, 3 Nov. 1686; Elizabeth 18 Apr. 1690; Joseph, again, 16 Feb. 1692; Mary, 3 Sept. 1693; Tristram, 9 June 1695; John, again, 10 Dec. 1696; and Stephen, 9 Oct. 1699; was ens. and d. 29 Jan. 1723. JOSEPH, Woburn, freem. 1676, perhaps s. of first Joseph, wh. rn. 4 Apr. 1699, Martha Lilly, in his will of 16 Jan. 1733 names w. Martha, and ds. Martha, Ruth, Rebecca, Hannah, Mary, and Dorothy. MAUTLYN, or MACKLIN, Boston 1643, had w. Dorothy. MICHAEL, Woburn, m. 20 Oct. 1657, Mary Bullard, had Mary, b. 14 Oct. 1658; Jonathan, 23 Mar. 1662; Joshua, 20 Jan. 1665; Lydia, 29 Sept. 1674; and he had been adm. freem. 1654. PHILIP, Charlestown, had w. Margery, ch. Jonathan, Philip, Rebecca, Elizabeth and Mary; wh. at his d. were of the ages respective. a. 26, 23, 17, 13, and 11; but he had rem. long, bef. to Topsfield, or near it, and d. Nov. 1668. Perhaps Mary m. 5 June 1677, Daniel Ross. PHILIP, Wenham 1669, s. of the preced. was of Salem 1670. RICHARD, Newbury, prob. younger br. of the first John, came with him from Southampton in the James, 1635, call. in the custom-ho. rec. tailor of Romsey, in Hants, m. says Coffin, Agnes Coffley, wh. d. 29 Mar. 1679, had Rebecca, b. 7 Mar. 1643; Sarah, 23 Mar. 1648; Ann; and Elizabeth He was sw. freem. 25 May 1636, was deac. and d. 4 Aug. 1683, in 81st yr. RICHARD, Weymouth 1637, ment. by Winthrop II. 348, may be he wh. was rec. an inhab. of Boston early in 1642, a slater, being adm. of the ch. a few days bef. and, perhaps, s. of a wid. Sarah, adm. in May 1639; freem. 18 May 1642, by w. Dinah bad Samuel, b. 9 Jan. bapt. 12 Feb. 1643, and bur. 25 Sept. foll.; Joseph, 16, bapt. 18 May 1615; and by w. Joanna had Joanna, b. 24 Jan. 1653; James, 1 Feb. 1665; but it may be very diffic. to disting. him from others of the name. RICHARD, Hampton, perhaps Portsmouth, 1643, was, perhaps, of Dover 1659, or bef. 1668, of Boston, a merch. RICHARD, Boston, by w. Joanna had James, wh. d. 27 Sept. 1662; Sarah, b. 6 Nov. 1656; and Mary, 25 Jan. 1659. RICHARD, Newport 1648, next yr. chos. Gen. Sergent, whatever that may mean, and many yrs. bot. Id. of Ind. on the contin. 1665 in conjunct. with Henry Hall of Westerly. He had eldest s. John of Norwich, as from law papers I learn; and this may imply, that he had other ch. RICHARD, Boston 1673, bricklayer, was call. to [[39]] serve in Philip's war on Conn. riv. in capt. Turner's comp. Perhaps he m. Sarah Kimball, and had d. Elizabeth to wh. her uncle John Kimball gave est. This Richard was bred a carver, but m. a w. of superior mind, Sarah, d. of Thomas Kemble, or Kimball, of Charlestown. They had only ch. Elizabeth wh. m. John Livingston of New London, and outliv. him. Some proof of the mother's literary skill is furnish. by her journal of travels in 1704 from Boston to New York and back, publish. so late as 1825 by Theodore Dwight, Esq. She had rem. aft. the d. of her h. to Norwich, and thence to New London, where she d. 25 Sept. 1727. See Caulkins's Hist. 372. RICHARD, Newbury, s. of the sec. John of the same, m. Elizabeth d. of Henry Jacques, had Henry, b. 6 July 1697; and Elizabeth 11 Mar. 1702. ROBERT, Hampton 1640, rem. to Boston, had, by first w. Samuel, b. 1642, wh. prob. d. young. He m. Ann, the young wid. of Thomas Cromwell, the rich privateersman, I presume early in 1650, and may thereafter have spent a yr. or more in Maine, but had Edward, b. 5 Feb. 1652; and Martha, 1 Sept. 1653; beside James, in 1654, wh. prob. d. soon; and he d. 27 June 1655; his will of 8 May preced. gave all to w. with care of only ch. Edward and Martha. ROBERT, Marblehead 1648, may be he wh. d. at Cambridge 29 Oct.1652; but nothing more is kn. There was a ROBERT of Marblehead 1673. ROBERT, Kittery 1647, rem. to York, d. 1676, his will of 23 June, pro. 24 Aug. of that yr. ment. s. Richard, liv. in Boston. ROGER, Portsmouth 1631, among the people sent by Mason the patentee. Belkn. I. 425. His d. Mary m. John Bruster or Brewster of Portsmouth. SAMUEL, Roxbury, m. 16 Oct. 1685, Sarah, perhaps d. of Abraham Howe of the same, had Mehitable, b. 9 Sept. 1686, d. under 17 yrs.; Samuel, wh. d. 20 May 1689; and Ebenezer, Feb. 1694. THOMAS, Salem 1661, a mason, perhaps s. of Walter. TOBY, Newport 1638. WALTER, Salem 1626, had been here in 1622, and is now sent over by the Dorchester people to strengthen Conant; perhaps was of Duxbury 1638; in 1653 giv. evidence a. something that occur. in 1622, perhaps only hearsay, he call. his age 66. WILLIAM, Salem, a mason, had gr. of ld. 1637, yet seems rather to belong to Lynn, freem. 2 May 1638, had John, Ann, Francis, Hannah, all by sec. w. Elizabeth Jacob, Daniel, Elizabeth and Mary, and d. 5 Mar. 1656. From Lewis was this acco. deriv. by Farmer; yet there is evid. that he had John and Francis, Joanna, and Mary only, all brot. from Eng. and that the s. both went home, and there Francis d. without issue; but John aft. serv. the parliam. cause in the civil war, obt. possessn. of est. in Eng. that was his f.'s m. and d. in that country. His will, of 2 Dec. 1653, provides for div. of est. among the ch. of both ws. ea. nam. and to eldest s. Jacob doub. portion. The inv. was ret. when the will was pro. 28 June 1655. WILLIAM, Topsfield, came, perhaps, in 1638, tho. by no means can I [[40]] agree with Farmer in mak. him freem. on 2 May of that yr. imply of course that he had come as early as 1637, when the prefix of resp. is wanting to this name next yr.; however it may be that he came not bef. 1639, in wh. yr. he had gr. of 200 acres at Ipswich, to the outlying farmers of wh. town, in 1641, at the place call. New Meadows, he began to preach. This was 8 or 9 yrs. bef. the incorp. by its present name, nor was a ch. allow. to be gather. there bef. 1645, as Winthrop II. 254, tells, so that prob. K. was discourag. at least bef. 1648 we kn. he went home. Mather, putting him into his first classis of min. found no Christian name for him, yet as above twenty others of the same list show the same deficiency, we may be sure, he did not much inquire. Of this name, had, in 1834, eight been gr. at the var. N. E. coll. yet none at Harv. KNOCKER, GEORGE, and THOMAS, misprint. thus in Geneal. Reg. III. 80 for Knower of Charlestown. KNOLLYS, HANSERD, Dover, was b. it is said, 1598 At Cawkwell in Co. Lincoln, bred at the Univ. of Cambridge, ord. 23 June 1629, as a priest by the Bp. of Peterborough, renounc. the ch. of Eng. in 1636, and in 1638 came to N. E. tho. some Eng. books say a yr. earlier. On arr. at Boston, he w as refus. permis. of resid. thro. suspic. of antinom. taint, so that he went to N. H. jurisdict. and in 1641 home, reach. London 24 Dec. See Winthrop I. 326; II. 27. Yet Brook's Lives of the Purit. III. sub voce, with Crosby's Hist. of Bapt. I. 334, furnish. more favora. views of his charact. and even Mather's Magn. Part of the fam. tradit. that Nathaniel, f. of Daniel was from Dartmouth, in Devon, may be reasona. eno. at least it bears no inherent improb. as the more fondly desir. clause of the story does, that he was one of the first comers to Plymouth; for that phrase belongs only to those wh. arr. in the yrs. 1620, 1, and 3, of wh. was no Ladd; and minute inquiry even shows, there was nobody in either of the three passeng. lists with that bapt. name.
